21 Bartica residents receive keys to new homes at Bartica housing scheme extension
Twenty-one persons hailing from Bartica, Region Seven, are now homeowners to new three-bedroom homes at the new Bartica housing scheme extension, a transition many describe as an opportunity to leave renting behind and build a more secure future.
Minister of Housing Collin Croal, accompanied by members of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), handed over the turnkey bungalow houses on Friday.
A total of 40 homes were constructed in the scheme. However, 21 gained access to their homes.
Each home is valued at approximately $13.5 million.
For first-time homeowner Mohamed Ishak, receiving the keys marked the fulfilment of a wish he and his wife had shared since getting married.
“It is a feeling beyond expression at this moment,” he said, explaining that, “We wished we had our own home and children came along the way and we still didn’t have our own home, and today we can actually call something our own.”
He said owning his own home will give his family a greater sense of independence after years of renting.
“We can turn our own key, we can come in. We don’t have the landlord to come in and tell us what to do and what not to do,” Ishak said.
Single parent Latoya Norville said the opportunity meant relief from the burden of paying rent while raising her family.
“As a single parent it has been a lot on me having to pay rent, so being given this opportunity to be able to own my own home is a wonderful feeling. It’s beyond words,” she said.
Norville thanked God and the government for helping her reach the milestone.
For Kelsy Brown, a mother of four who had experienced a fire, the new home offered a chance to rebuild her life.
“After I was a fire victim, I feel very appreciative that I can start over because of God’s grace,” she said.
Meanwhile, Minister Croal said housing development was taking place in three areas in Bartica, including an existing CH&PA scheme where house lots have been allocated and homes constructed.
“The first 21 have been able to receive their access to their home, three-bedroom bungalow houses, and we are happy about that,” he said.
